Lyrics: The Stranger
(c) Morgenblume aka Gill Whitehurst Dec 2006
A "Stranger at the Inn" story(main tune Jack Orion)
Outside frostly glowed the moon, whilst inside the fire inside glowed bright and true
The stranger brought chill into the room as he entered through the door
All in the tavern asitting there the patrons sang so merrily
and bid the stranger show his hand and sing a song right there
The stranger looked around and round the room
with a glint in both his eyes
"My voice is not quite what it was
but a riddle I'll devise"
With a thoughtful sigh he took from
out his cloak an item rare
Sparkling in the firelight
The Patrons wide-eyed stared
Tell me what you see in my hand, for it holds the truth of all the world
Who'll be the first to make their guess, come now wise men aren't ye all?"
and he's placed the glittering fairy shape on the window ledge for all to see
and waved his hand in front their face "Look, but touch not I prithee"
First a young blade so full of youth stared at the prize, wide eyed with love
"I see a jewel so perfect made, that my lady she must have"
Next the clerk in cautious pose stepped up close and gazed a while
"a jewel I doubt in your cold hand, Glass bauble more the style"
"It's part of a stolen necklace"
"It's the working from a clock"
"It's the button from a ladies gown"
Its a pricey bottle stop"
The people argued loud and fast
They drank as they did speak
The Landlord hadn't made such gold
since the blacksmith's wake last week
He gave the Stranger meat and drink and free bed for the night was his
But before the crowd let him retire, an answer they would have
"and the one of us that guessed it right the treasure should possess we think"
and they've all drawn round the Stranger's chair, but smiling this he said
"All that you see is what you see
And you see through what you know
Or perhaps you see just what you want
But the truth to you I'll show"
He's taken the jewel from the cold cold ledge he's placed it in his hand so warm
and slowly its weeping water tears, and in moments it is gone
and the Minstrel I sat by the fire tears of laughter filled my open eyes
"Peace now good men, for he told no lie, and now we're all the wise
"All that you see is what you see
And you see through what you know
Or perhaps you see just what you want
Easy come and easy go"
